Safety & COR
COR certified. Safety is part of the spec.
Commercial Paving holds a Certificate of Recognition (COR) for its health and safety program, issued with the Alberta Construction Safety Association and the Government of Alberta.
Certified 2026
What COR certified means.
A COR is not a sticker you buy. Our health and safety program was audited on site by an independent auditor accredited with the Alberta Construction Safety Association, who checked the written program against what actually happens on our jobs: the paperwork, the equipment and interviews with the crew.
To pass, a program has to score at least 80% overall and at least 50% in every element. Commercial Paving passed its external audit in 2026, stepping up from SECOR, the small-employer version of the program, to a full COR.
Why it matters
What it means for your project.
Property managers & owners
A crew working in your lot, beside your tenants and their cars, under a program that has been independently audited. Traffic control, hazard assessments and equipment checks are part of the job, not an afterthought.
General contractors
COR is a common line on prequalification forms, and Commercial Paving meets it, along with active WCB coverage and full bonding and insurance.
Public & institutional owners
Many municipal and institutional tenders ask for COR before a contractor can bid. Commercial Paving holds it, and keeps it current with a maintenance audit every year.
The program
What the auditor checked.
Written health & safety manual
Policies, roles and safe work procedures for paving, excavation and equipment work, signed off by senior management.
Hazard assessments
A formal assessment of every job task, plus a field-level hazard assessment by the crew at the start of each job.
Crew safety meetings
Regular documented toolbox meetings, so lessons from one site reach the whole crew.
Training & tickets
Orientation, WHMIS, traffic control and first aid tracked for every worker on a training matrix.
Equipment inspections
Pre-use checks and a preventive maintenance schedule for pavers, rollers, trucks and safety equipment.
Emergency response
Site emergency plans, trained first aiders on the crew and stocked first aid kits on every job.
Incident investigation
Incidents and near misses are investigated and tracked to a corrective action, not filed away.
Audited every year
An external audit to certify, then a maintenance audit in each of the two years after, to keep the COR.
COR questions.
What is a COR?
A Certificate of Recognition (COR) is awarded to Alberta employers whose health and safety management system has been evaluated by a certified auditor and meets provincial standards. It is issued jointly by a Certifying Partner, in construction the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA), and the Government of Alberta.
What does it take to earn one?
An external audit by an ACSA-accredited auditor, scoring at least 80% overall and at least 50% in every element of the program. A COR is valid for three years, and only if a maintenance audit is completed in each of the two years after certification.
How is COR different from SECOR?
SECOR is the small-employer version of the program, for companies with 10 or fewer employees. Commercial Paving held SECOR before stepping up to a full COR in 2026.
